Pac Ma banyan tree is one of the prominent natural symbols of Son La, closely associated with the history, culture and life of local people, especially in Pac Ma commune, Quynh Nhai district. The banyan tree is not only a natural heritage but also contains precious spiritual and historical values.
67 years ago, Pac Ma banyan tree in Pac Ma village, Pac Ma commune, Quynh Nhai district, was a tree growing naturally about 300m from inter-provincial road 171 on a hill. During the resistance war against French colonialism, Quynh Nhai district had an important strategic military position as a solid springboard for the Tay Tien Army to break through the Da River defense line to liberate Lai Chau. The banyan tree is a testament to the victory of our army in the Northwest campaign in 1952, and is often called Pac Ma banyan tree by local people. Currently, the banyan tree still grows strong on the hill, surrounded by the vast river water of the Son La hydroelectric reservoir (in the territory of Quynh Nhai district). On February 28, 2007, the Chairman of the People's Committee of Son La province approved the historical relic according to Decision No. 462/QD-UBND.
